Profile On Andrea Motis & Joan Chamorro and Zoe Modiga


The Cape Town International Jazz Festival is the grandest and biggest music festival held in sub-Saharan Africa hosted by espAfrika. It was being referred to ‘Africas Grandest Gathering’ and thus the Jazz Festival is celebrating their 15th annual event this year and has yet again set the bar sky high for another phenomenal event.

Along all the world renowned artists performing at the festival this year are, Andrea Motis & Joan Chamorro Group and Zoe Modiga. Leading into the festivities of the weekend ahead, here is what you can expect on the Moses Molelekwa stage, 27 March 2015.

Andrea Motis and Joan Chamorro group is a soulful band with the star of the group, Andrea Motis, a 19 year old singer, trumpet and saxophone player. Alongside her very talented mentor Joan Chamorro they started the group and are now taking the world by storm. The duo is considered a revelation in Catalan jazz. They are accompanied by Josep Tarver on guitar and other strings, Ignasi Terraza on piano and Esteve Pi on drums.

Andrea Motis’ voice has been compared to that of Norah Jones. Recent CD releases include the albums "Live at Jamboree" and "Feeling Good," which has 232,935 views on YouTube, and was recorded in 2012, but launched in June 2013.

The group is currently on tour and the Jazz festival is just among one of the many stops they are scheduled to make, they are also performing at the Festival Ellas Crean (Conde Duque) in Madrid 20 & 21 March 2015 and after the Cape Town Jazz Festival, they are moving onto the Cheltenham Jazz Festival-The Daffodil in Cheltenham on the 1st April 2015.

Moving from a Spanish Jazz band to one of South African local artist, Zoe ‘Palesa Nomthandazo Phumele’ Modiga, this aspiring young talented  jazz musician was born in Pietermaritzburg. She started her schooling career at the national school of arts in Braamfontein, Johannesburg where she studied classical piano, clarinet and singing.

Modiga has been part of many festivals, just to name a few, the Aardklop festival, UCT jazz festival and Cape Town International Jazz festival. She has also shared a stage with many extraordinary jazz musicians such as Gloria Bosman, Matthew Gold, and The Frank Paco Ensemble. The Kiffness with which whom she is working on a track called, “dream”.

Modiga continues to pursue her multi-talented career. She recently won the Grand West casino and entertainment world open mic series which gave her the opportunity to perform on the Moses Molelekwa stage at the upcoming 15th Cape Town International Jazz festival. This includes playing at the free concert as well as the main shows. This singer, songwriter and performer is currently a full time third-year student at the South African Music College UCT, majoring in Jazz vocals.
